Job Opening: Marine Stewards Internship Program
Goal of the PositionThis position will support the mission of the Farallones Marines Sanctuary Association by assisting with the Beach Watch program of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. Beach Watch is a long-term, beach-monitoring project that was started in 1993. Every four weeks trained volunteers survey "their beach, " counting, identifying, and photo-documenting birds and marine mammals and human activity on- and immediately offshore. Beach Watch volunteers are often the first on the scene of a boat grounding, report oil or tar balls, and learn to collect and preserve oil samples as evidence. Beaches surveyed stretch from Bodega Head in Sonoma County to Año Nuevo in San Mateo County. Time CommitmentThe Beach Watch Intern will work a minimum of 12 hours/week. The schedule will be flexible to the intern’s available hours. Interns must commit to work for at least one semester, or a minimum of 4 months. Longer commitments are preferable. Major ResponsibilitiesAssist the Beach Watch Supervisor in all aspects of managing the Beach Watch program. The intern will be responsible for maintaining and improving the Beach Watch data flow. This will include: tracking incoming datasheets and film, organizing and processing slides, entering data, and quality checking previously entered data. The intern will have opportunities to conduct Beach Watch surveys and participate in Sanctuary educational lectures and excursions. QualificationsRequired: Must be a college student or have an undergraduate degree. Must have basic knowledge of the marine environment and interest in marine conservation and monitoring. Skilled in the use of computers. Basic writing and editing. Desired: Experience in data collection and entry. Knowledge of birds and marine mammals of the Central California coast. Training RequiredOn the job training will be provided by the Beach Watch Supervisor as well as the Data Coordinator and Research Associate. Work LocationThe offices for the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association are located at Crissy Field in the Presidio of San Francisco. Interns are responsible for providing their own transportation to the office. Transportation from the office to field sites and outreach events will be provided. The internship will provide opportunities to learn about the marine environment, long-term monitoring programs, and scientific data collection and management.
