Come Visit New Farallones Sanctuary Exhibit

Dolphins On September 29, with the grand reopening of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and the Academy premiered a major installation – The California Rocky Coast.

With fascinating ocean creatures and dynamic, interactive exhibits, it appeals to all generations. As part of the “Water is Life” exhibit, it brings to life the rich and colorful world beneath the waves.

Point ReyesHumpbacks Make a Splash

Sought after for their oil, baleen and other byproducts, humpback whales were hunted intensively in the North Pacific until 1966 when they gained international protection.

At the time, the population estimate for the North Pacific stocks numbered a mere 1,400.

Endangered Spotlight: Black Abalone

Guadalupe fur seal

Black Abalone are a medium sized mollusk that live in rocky habitat from intertidal areas down to depths of 120 ft.  They are distributed over an area from just north of San Francisco to Baja California, Mexico.

The mollusks are distinguishable by a smooth black / slaty blue shell with a pearly white interior, as opposed to the rougher surfaces of other abalone species and their more silvery mother of pearl color interior.
