Tanker Disaster Near-miss

Tanker under Golden Gate On an unassuming Tuesday evening in late January, the oil tanker Overseas Cleliamar lost power just outside the Golden Gate Bridge.  With a 3 knot current heading out the Gate and unable to anchor in the deep strait, the ship was forced dangerously close to the rocky cliffs in the Marin Headlands.

SharkSF Ocean Film Festival

We're just days away from the 6th Annual San Francisco Ocean Film Festival! Here are some highlights:

For the first time, there will be a special program celebrating our Sanctuaries and marine protected areas! See films on the Farallones and Cordell Bank Sanctuaries, the new Farallon Islands video, and California's Marine Protected Areas on Friday, February 20th from 2:00 pm to 4pm.

Following the Shearwaters

New Zealand BayExperience firsthand the global connection between our own Gulf of the Farallones upwelling ecosystem and exotic New Zealand.

Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is collaborating with EuroPanache to offer a series of educational field trips accompanied by scientists and naturalists to explore global wildlife connections in some of the major upwelling regions in the world.

Wildlife Spotlight: Pacific Herring

Herring SchoolEach spring in the Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary, schools of Pacific herring return to their natal waters to spawn.  Journeying back from the open ocean, they linger for days or weeks in the coastal waters outside Bodega Bay before entering and congregating in the shallow inter-tidal zone.
