Community Lecture: Invasive Plants at Bolinas Lagoon

Non-native plants can be aggressive invaders that alter the physical and biological features of our coastal resources, and pose significant threats to habitat and species within our sanctuary.  As you can see in the photo on the right, non-native Spartina (left) is similar to the native plant (right) and difficult to decipher without the proper knowledge and education.

On Wednesday, May 16th at the Bolinas firehouse, Katy Zaremba and Drew Kerr from the San Francisco Estuary Invasive Spartina Project presented information on one such invader, invasive Spartina commonly known as cordgrass, which is threatening Bolinas Lagoon. Katy and Drew educated the audience about the history of invasive Spartina in the Bay Area, its presence at the Lagoon, and current control and eradication methods.

The lecture was a great way to inform the public on efforts to protect the Lagoon from invasive vegetation, and educated the community about how they can be on the lookout for potential plant invaders in in their own backyard.  For more information about the lecture and other restoration efforts in Bolinas Lagoon visit our Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary partner website here.

Final Meeting of the JWG on Vessel Strikes, Acoustic Impacts

Last week, The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito hosted the seventh meeting of the Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries Joint Working Group on Ship Strikes and Acoustic Impacts. The mission of this group is to make recommendations to the Superintendents on policy, research and education actions the Sanctuaries can implement to reduce the risk of harm to large whales from commercial shipping. This meeting focused on finalizing recommendations for consideration by the full advisory councils. Recommendations will be released at the June 7th Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting in Point Reyes, CA.

This project is one of many resource protection and policy working groups supported in the private - public partnership between the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association and the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.  A special thanks is due to The Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation for their support of this process.
