Save our California Coast! Support the Boundary Expansion of the Gulf of the Farallones & Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuaries!

Fearing the prospect of oil and gas drilling off the Northern California coast, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Lynn Woolsey appeared recently in San Francisco with marine scientists and conservationists to promote legislation that would expand the boundaries of two national marine sanctuaries. The legislation, effectively called The Boundary Modification Act—authored by Woolsey, with a parallel measure that Boxer introduced in the Senate—would increase the jurisdiction of the Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank national marine sanctuaries to include all of the Sonoma Coast. This bill will extend the sanctuaries' permanent ban on oil and gas drilling to those areas.

See the complete SF Chronicle article for even more pertinent information on this essential bill. Also read more about the press conference FMSA recently hosted with Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Boxer in the article and "In The News" section of Upwelling.

Our Coast Needs Your Help! Please write or fax the members of the resource committee to express your support for this essential legislation.

Here is a sample letter:

Dear (Congressperson),

I am writing to express fervent support for the legislation proposed by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer that would expand the boundaries of the Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries to include all of the Sonoma Coast. With more than three million visitors a year, the Sonoma Coast is a national treasure that needs our full protection. Endorsed by the California Coastal Commission, this bill will apply the same protections, including a permanent ban on offshore drilling (which Californians have staunchly supported for decades) that currently apply to all four existing California sanctuaries. California voters' dedication to the defense of our shores from oil spills and other environmental disasters—as well as the restoration of plant, endangered fish and wildlife and its surrounding waters—is clearly represented by this critical legislation.

Sincerely,
