Beach Watch Methods & Results

Currently, Beach Watch volunteers monitor 41 beach segments every two to four weeks from Bodega Head in Sonoma County to Año Nuevo County on the San Mateo/Santa Cruz county line.

Methods

Survey methods along each beach segment include:

  • Live bird and marine mammal count,
  • Visitor/dog activity notation,
  • Beached (dead) vertebrate documentation,
  • General wrack and invertebrate assessment,
  • Oil/tarball documentation, and
  • Streams and lagoons status

Baseline Biological Data

Consistently gathered beached vertebrate data from the shoreline of the Sanctuary provide baseline species mortality rates. Live bird and mammal data is useful as a species index and can provide known location of threatened and endangered species to direct resource protection efforts during oil spills.
